5 tips to control your asthma this winter

According to the Asthma Society of Ireland almost 1 in 10 people in Ireland have asthma. Asthma related absenteeism amongst adult sufferers accounts for an average of 12 days per year. Asthma in children is attributable to 10 days sickness. Cold winter air is never welcome for asthma sufferers as it can trigger the symptoms synonymous with asthma, i.e. cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. Keeping asthma under control is especially important at this time of year.

Here are 5 tips from Dr. Sylvester Mooney on how you can get through the winter months if you suffer from asthma:

  1. Make sure you have a plan! Managing your asthma is vitally important. You need to talk to your doctor regularly and formulate a plan that best suits your needs to contain your asthma.
  2. Stick to the plan! Make sure you are taking your medicines exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  3. Keep your blue inhaler (reliever or rescue inhaler) with you, always, everywhere! It is very important that you know how to use your inhalers and what their specific function is.
